Vacation: Monday

Last week Jack was attending a week-long camp at the museum, so I took the kids on a little vacation. We pulled out of the driveway at 9:00 Monday morning.

We got into town in time for a little lunch. Alice thinks it's fun to feed people, and Jack thought it was great fun to be fed.

The first day of class! This is the third time he's taken a class here and he has always enjoyed it.

Alice got to enjoy herself a little before it was time for us to leave.

That evening we attended a science program at the library. This is how Alice spent pretty much the whole hour: rolling around on the floor flashing people, trying to sneak out the back door, and strewing stale Chocolate Cheerios under the chairs. It must have been tiring for her, too, because she fell asleep as soon as we got in the car.

On the way back to the hotel, we tried out a new yogurt place.

And as soon as we reached the hotel, Alice woke up. Don't they look ready for bed here? Sleep didn't come for them until about 11:00, and then I did what all moms do on vacation: Sat in the bathroom and read math curriculum information.

More vacation posts soon!

Happy 4th of July!

We spent the evening at my sister-in-law's house. A bunch of their neighbors got together and pooled food and fireworks.

It appears that someone brought blue cupcakes.

Jack had a good time doing sparklers and watching the big stuff from on top of the car.

And when things got too noisy, Alice and I retreated to the backyard for a little quiet time.

I hope you had a relaxing weekend!

More Splash Pad Fun

Before we went on our trip, my sister and I took the kids to the splash pad. We had never been to this one before, but Jack has been wanting to go since I showed him pictures of his cousins there last summer. All of the water areas look like fountains. It is really nice!

Alice is really starting to enjoy splash pad days. (Yes, I realize she doesn't necessarily look like she's enjoying it here.)

Getting some sun. I discovered there is no good way to scoot down an astroturf hill on your bottom.

For a moment, all of the kids were in the same area. I thought it would be nice to get a picture of them all together for my dad's birthday, but as you can see, it didn't work out so well. This was the best one.

I love this wrinkled nose look she does. So. cute.

This was the first time Alice has really played much on a playground and she seemed to love it!

There are a couple more splash pads around town I want to try before the summer is over. I'm sure that the heat won't end anytime soon, so we'll get many chances!

I'm An Awful Person

This sign clinched it for me. I am horrible. I cannot help but laugh when people fall down. Not just laugh haha, but shake and cry laugh. I know that America's Funniest Home Video kind of humor is about the lowest form of comedy, but I can't help it. Falling gets me every. single. time.

There used to be a giant metal knight that you could see from the highway on the way into town. He started leaning backward at the waist and by the time they took him down, he looked like he was in a slow-motion fall about to hit the ground. I would get giddy with anticipation as I got closer to the knight, but since I was driving 60+, I didn't think it was wise to take a picture. I did slow down for this one on my way home, though. It brightens up my day to see it. Maybe if the city thinks there is a big enough chance that someone will fall that they put out a sign, I will actually see someone do it. Just hopefully not in front of my car, because that would ruin it. (I don't know why they just spent money on a sign rather than fixing the problem, but I like it anyway.)

So if we are together and you fall, please know that although I am laughing at you, I really do hope you're okay. I just can't ask because I'm laughing too hard. And if it's any comfort, I have laughed at some of my very own falls, too. Not long after we moved here, I took a horrendous tumble right on my kneecap in my parents' garage. As I was headed for the ground, I realized that this was probably a spectacular fall. And then I thought I might be crippled for life. Thankfully I wasn't--and of course that was when we didn't have insurance--but my knee does still give me any trouble. I'm hoping that story absolves me of some of my awfulness.

And for you enjoyment, here are a couple of goodies. A friend posted this one on her Facebook page, and what really makes it are the subtitles at the end. And here's a little montage I found on Youtube. I was tearing up watching it when Jack came in, so I had to pause it and act like a respectable mother, not some jerk laughing at other people's pain. But I just can't help it.

Back soon with a nicer post!

Girly Girl

One day Jack told me, "Mom, Alice isn't very ladylike. She's kind of manlike."

I think he was thinking of instances like this one, which you see fairly often with Alice. And she doesn't have a dainty laugh, either. When she thinks something is funny, she throws her head back and really, really laughs hard.

But she loves her baby dolls. (Here she is hugging on Honey, a doll I got for my first Christmas.)

She got two new baby dolls, a stroller, and a baby bed for her birthday. She grabs those babies up and hugs them so hard it's almost abusive.

When we went to the toy store last week, she didn't seem to think she had enough.

And then there are the accessories. This pink bracelet came with the toy purse she got for Christmas. She has been wearing it almost all the time lately--she even sleeps in it sometimes.

Thankfully, it's waterproof, too.

When she found the lacing beads, she wanted to wear them.

I'm just going to warn you in advance that if you visit us, she will confiscate your shoes. Sorry about that.

And you can't forget the glasses! I am rarely the one wearing my own glasses.

I am just hoping that she continues to like Target, or the teen years are going to be very expensive around here!

See You On The Other Side

We'll be unplugged most of this week while Jack is in camp and we're visiting with old friends. I have some posts set for the next few days and we'll see you when we return. I hope you have a super week!

Blackberries

Now that we've moved, we had to find a new place to pick blackberries. My sister found one that is not too far from us, so I loaded up the kids and we met them there at 7:00. In the morning.

Jack has been so many times that he's a pro.

This was Alice's second time to go, but she's not much on picking yet. She prefers to sit in the middle of the rows and wait for someone to hand her some to eat.

We brought home three pounds.

This morning I made muffins. I used this recipe, and it was pretty good, but I found I needed to add a lot more milk. I'll use the rest in a pie.

One more, just because I think it's cute.
