Miss Rumphius

Over the last couple of weeks (we had a break in there while I was at the OCHEC Convention) we have been rowing Miss Rumphius.

Printables were from HSS, as usual!

We watched the DVD of this book and discussed how it was similar to Miss Rumphius.

 Jack's Venn Diagram

We made thumbprint flowers--and learned that if you get the paint too gloppy, it doesn't look like a thumbprint anymore!

We reviewed the parts of a plant.

 A few go-alongs...

I wasn't trying to be artsy here, I was just trying to get rid of the glare.  And then blogger flipped it...

Island Boy is another Barbara Cooney book that has some similarities to Miss Rumphius.

This was a great tie-in with our story and our presidents!

For tea time one day we had flower cupcakes!

We wrapped up the week by setting up this little greenhouse.  Hopefully we will see some growth soon!

Fun Friday: Laid Back

Today we didn't do anything exceptionally exciting, which was perfect since we have had such a crazy busy week.  We had a normal day of school, then I dropped Jack off for a sleepover at my sister's and took Alice out to dinner with my friend Brandy.  Pretty much perfect all around.

Check out my post at Metro Family on Summer Adventure Boxes.  I really need to get to work!

Happy Friday!

The Last Day of Speech

Today was Jack's last day of speech.  For good.

We are really excited.  (And he's saying that with a perfectly enunciated r sound.)

We went to the park afterward to celebrate.

As we were leaving, we passed the school and Alice said, "I hate that school!"  Let's hope she doesn't have to go to speech, or that if she does, she's forgotten it by then.  Thankfully she was wonderful all year as we had to wait.

I hope your day was great, too!

Convention Time

Rachel and I were laughing about this one this morning as we were listening to none other than Andrew Pudewa himself!

Jack's Choir Program

Tonight was Jack's end of the year choir program.

This was also the last night for Miss Neva, the children's choir director.

If you want to know how long she's been around, that's her in the pink pants.  And the weird looking girl next to her is none other than me.  That's a long time.

Jack had a Bible verse to read and he did a great job!  (If I ever can figure out how to get the video on here, I will!)

He also got a sticker for his hymnal for Hymns in My Heart and a High Attendance Award--his third!

Track Meet!

Today Jack ran in his first track meet!

In the 50 meter dash he placed fifth out of nine.

Since I have zero experience with track meets, I was not aware that a huge portion of your time is spent waiting.  We decided next year we would bring snacks and entertainment since the camera was the only thing we had with us to amuse ourselves.

Partway through the events they let all the little kids come out and run.  The people behind me were dying laughing at Alice's starting stance and were sure she was just going to roll over when they blew the whistle.  I thought they might be right.

She took off running, though!  They gave them some candy and a towel and Alice thought she was a big kid.

In the 100 meter dash, he placed third (out of three).  Some of these kids were pretty hard core.  We asked Jack if he wanted some tighter clothes next time and then we all laughed.

Since he's never done any kind of competitive sports, I wasn't sure what he would think of the whole experience.  He seemed to enjoy it, though, and he says he wants to do it again next year.  I think his reasons are a little different from most of the other kids' reasons, though.  When we were talking this evening, he asked if I knew what color the 4th and 6th place ribbons were.  It turns out that he would like one of every color so he can have a complete set.  Some things never change!
