Friday Fun: Recovery

There was nothing too crazy today.  We have been learning about weather and rainbows and we had a rainbow lunch.  We got to stay home, and I was thankful because we were out late last night--and we're hardly ever out at all at night!--and I needed a recovery day.

We went to the museum to see a special exhibit and the kids made their own vases when they were done.  Jack worked really hard on his!

Alice made four--one of each kind they had--and left two for the display board.

It has also been a long week.  Sunday night Jack threw up, and when we went to the doctor Monday morning to have Alice's ear checked out (she had an ear infection), she threw up in the parking lot.  Wednesday night was extremely stormy.  The other days we have been out running errands and other things.  So I am so glad we could stay home and regroup today!

Alice learned to blow up balloons this week.

She's also going through the Take A Picture Of Everything Phase, which Jack did at this age, too.  He made me laugh the other day when he saw her taking so many pictures and said, "Alice!  Stop!  You're going to use it all up!"  When I asked him what exactly she was going to use up, he wasn't sure.  I always leave these pictures because I think it's funny to see what they think is picture-worthy, like a picture of the messy kitchen island taken through the back of the barstool.

 Or your brother's gym class.

Or a horse from the leg of your favorite pajamas that you can still squeeze into, even though they're a size too small and your toes may bust out at any moment.

Happy Friday!

Fun Friday: Ballet

This morning we went to see Angelina Ballerina.

Alice has liked Angelina for a long time and she even took her own Angelina to see the performance!

Our next stop was to see "The Five Moons" sculptures at the Tulsa Historical Society.

This is the Maria Tallchief sculpture.  We were just reading a book about her yesterday to tie in with our Degas artist study and then I read this afternoon that she passed away.

Jack had to try some of the moves.

Happy Friday!

Angelo

It's been a while since we wrapped up Angelo, but I wanted to share a few things--mostly so I'll remember them when Alice gets to this book!

We talked about the Sistine Chapel and how it had been cleaned and restored.

We had seen an example of a ceiling that was cleaned when we visited the Marland Mansion last fall.  The dark spot in the circle is what the ceiling looked like before they cleaned it!

This is a neat book that has a pigeon flying through Rome and passing by lots of famous buildings--and was a good go-along since Jack is learning about Roman history.

We checked Hear Say Italian out from our library and had a good time listening to it on the way to our pigeon field trip.

We read these books, too.  Peter and the Pigeons is good for younger kids.  Grandmother's Pigeon was okay, but strange.

On our field trip we learned about the movie Valiant, so we watched that, too!

Fun Friday: Medieval Fair

For several years we have been going to the Medieval Fair, and every year I always say a heartfelt prayer of thanks that Jay doesn't own any medieval fair-type costumes.  Oh my.

This year we went down the night before to play with friends and stay at a hotel.  I always make them take a picture like this before we go swimming, just like I had to do growing up.

They love the pool but they were sad to see that there wasn't a hot tub anymore.  My kids love hot tubs, especially Alice.

The other thing they love about going to a hotel is watching King of the Hill, or King of the Castle, as Alice calls it.  They only get to watch this if we're at a hotel and if the episodes are appropriate, which thankfully this time they were.

This morning we made it to the Medieval Fair just about opening time.  Jack wanted to go on the swings first thing.

This year Alice was tall enough to try them and she did it all by herself and had a great time!

 You must have Dippin' Dots.

We watched the jousting but most of my pictures look like this because we were several rows back.

Jack (who took this picture) stood on Alice's stroller tray to see and I had Alice on my shoulders.  Thankfully they didn't want to stay for the whole presentation.

Jolly Pirate

When we were done we went out for lunch before heading home.

Now the kids are at a weekend-long sleepover with cousins at Grandma's house so hopefully I will get some things done around here.  So far we have gone out to eat, spent a lot of time browsing at WalMart, and watched Leo stalk crickets, so I'm off to a great start!

Happy Friday!

Artist Study: Cezanne

Our latest artist study was on Paul Cezanne.

 We started here.

The Laurence Anholt artist books are really enjoyable.  We also checked out a few random books from the library--nothing really notable, but it's always nice to be able to flip through and see lots of examples.

Cezanne was known for his still life pictures so we tried our hand at a couple of different projects like this one from Art in the Big Green Room.

We also tried this project from Art with Mrs. Smith that I really enjoyed--the kids, not so much, but the lesson was geared toward 6th graders, so I guess that's understandable!

Speaking of artists, have you seen the new Tea Time series at the Homeschool Share Blog?  There are ideas and printables for artists, poets, and composers--and all for free!

Ask Mr. Bear

Alice recently finished up Ask Mr. Bear.

I used some of Ami's ideas as we worked on the letter G--this is a G covered in gift wrap.  I've also been using these ABC Find It sets from 1+1+1=1, and Alice loves them.  I am really hoping she posts the I one soon since we're learning about instruments!

Ami has been working so hard updating so many of the units at Homeschool Share (where we got most of the printables we used).  On many units you can now preview the pdf before you download it!

Homeschool Creations also has some good things, too. After Alice finished this tracing page she asked for it back and added her name at the bottom.

We watched Happy Birthday, Moon on DVD.

We played "Guess the Present" over and over.

I got this box on clearance from Discount School Supply a while back and it was perfect!

Jack even played a few rounds!

We practiced counting with birthday candles.

We even celebrated a birthday (my mom's)!  The kids shared this ginormous chocolate thing and Alice didn't go to sleep until so so so late that night.  Sugar+nap+time change=tired mama.

We had so much fun with this book!  I often forget to share what I'm doing with Alice because I don't need to remember it for another child like I did before, but I never did this one with Jack and even with the books we did do, so many of the printables have been updated, so be sure to check out all the great preschool units at HSS!
